History

When using the word “quartz,” many people typically think of clear quartz. There are many different types of quartz, however clear quartz is one of the most common stones. Quartz earned its name from the Greek term krystallos, meaning ice. Greek philosophers, like Theophrastus, believed that clear quartz was ice formed by the gods, made so cold that it could never thaw. One story in Greek mythology says that Hercules dropped the crystal of truth from Mount Olympus, and the crystal broke into many pieces. Those pieces are said to be the stones we know today as clear quartz. It is said that this is the reason that a person using clear quartz for scrying cannot lie.

Another meaning of clear quartz comes from Japan, where the word used roughly translated to “perfect jewel” and believed to be a symbol of purity and patience. They believed that larger clear quartz stones were dragon’s saliva, and smaller stones came from the breath of a dragon.
