History

Amazonite is also called “the Amazon Stone,” named for the Amazon River Basin, where it was believed to first be found. This stone is believed to date back to around the 10th Century BC and is one of the many topics of different narratives throughout history. One legend of this stone’s origin says that amazonite was used by the ancient Amazon warrior women of Brazil as shield embellishments and to cure sickness and heal wounds. It is also said that civilians in ancient Brazil gave amazonite stones to men and travelers who visited them. One legend links the Amazon warrior women to the stones gifted to travelers, saying that the Prussian explorer Alexander von Humboldt was given an Amazon stone from "a land of women without men, where women live alone." Another legend linked to amazonite comes from Babylonian mythology. It is said that amazonite was gifted to Tiamat, the goddess of the sea. Tiamat was believed to be one of the first gods.

Amazonite has also been known to be widely used by the ancient Egyptians, who used this stone to craft beautiful jewelry, decorative jewelry, and to document important texts. The Egyptians used flat chunks of amazonite to carve out chapter seven from the Judgment of Osiris, from their Book of the Dead. Various other artifacts containing amazonite have been discovered in Egypt as well. For example, in the tomb of Tutankhamun, a scarab ring was found, along with other items, carved from amazonite.
